Free web sites My old web page http://bill_buchanan.tripod.com has disappeared. I will miss it. It has been with me since at least 2002. In recent years I have moved on to larger sites. Clawz.com proved to be undependable, as the site was up and down like a yoyo. So far byethost.com has proven to be excellent in the 13 months I have used it. Synching to nFS At present my big task is using Ancestral Quest 12.1 to synchonize my database with http://new.familysearch.org, which should go public sometime in the next year or two. Why bother? Well, if I die tomorrow, my genealogy will not be lost, even if the interest in genealogy skips a generation, as it often does. Genealogy software I few minutes ago I made this posting to Dick Eastman's blog: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2010/01/rootsmagic-essentials.html I am sure that Rootsmagic is a wonderful program, and when I have some extra time I will probably try [the free RootsMagic] Essentials. Right now I am using Ancestral Quest to synchronize my PAF database with new familysearch. Ancestral Quest also has some features that PAF does not, so why do I hold onto PAF? 1. ease of use 2. familiarity, which makes it super fast 3. advanced focus filter of great flexibility 4. unbeatable free support locally and at 1-866-406-1830 5. notes of unlimited size (PAF is my filing cabinet) 6. ease of creating a web site 7. support for multiple languages and scripts 8. ability to run program and data from a flash drive I note that the lastest RootsMagic now has points 7 & 8. I have tried to love Legacy, I am trying to enjoy Ancestral Quest, and I am curious about RootsMagic, but in most situations PAF gets my job done easier and faster. PAF (Personal Ancestral File) is free from http://familysearch.org
