More on the Buchanan Y-DNA Study
I am glad to report that I was able to help one of the genetic matches I contacted. He wrote, "My ancestor, William Buchanan came from Castlederg, Tyrone probable very soon after he married Matilda Carson in a church in Castlederg. He settled in Flesherton, Grey county in Ontario and all his 13 children were born in Canada."
"His father, Robert married Sarah Stewart. His father, Joseph married Nancy Carson"
From this information (confirmed by further information which he gave me later), he is a descendant of the Buchanans of Cooel (Coolavanagh), which connects to the ancestors of James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, through Thomas Buchanan of Ramelton, Donegal.
"John Buchanan married an Eleanor Moore in 1745 and had a family of 3 girls and 1 boy: Sally, Martha, Eleanor and Joseph. Joseph Buchanan married a Nancy Carson in 1795. To them were born: John, Mary, James, Eleanor, Robert, William and Matilda." quoted from "BUCHANAN FAMILY OF COOLAVANAGH (COOEL), DRUMQUIN", By David Keys, Glenarn, Lack in "DRUMQUIN 2007".

Bill,
The title of David Keys article is a little misleading, since the Buchanans of Cooel which he references only appear half way down his tree. To my eye, your Robert, and his father Joseph, are prior to the marriage into the Cooel line, which only occurs in 1833. It's still fascinating, but I think your Buchanans might more correctly be referred to as "of Castlederg".
Craig
Craig,
David Key has two Buchanan lines. His article traces his mother's paternal Buchanan line back to Samuel Buchanan of Cooel who married Matilda Buchanan of Castlederg in 1833. Matilda's grandfather, John Buchanan of Castlederg married Eleanor Moore of Castlederg in 1745. So David's Buchanan of Castlederg line has been traced further back than his Buchanan of Cooel line. But since Cooel is local to Drumquin, it would probably be of more interest to readers of the Drumquin book.
John Buchanan of Castlederg's parents may (or may not) be William Buchanan of Donegal and Margaret Creery. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
My own family were "of Castlederg", living in Learmore townland (3 km SW of Castlederg) when they first appear in the Derg Parish Church records in 1815. There are hints they may have previously come from Donegal. We are still hoping for a YDNA connection to someone with a proven pedigree going further back. My cousin Darlene has purchased the 111 marker upgrade for both Ernest and Mervyn.
We also have family from this line. Is there any info or pictures that you are able to share?
Maria,
The oldest photos we have are from around 1900.

I am painfully new at this but am learning a lot! I have found a few photos online, very interesting.
