I am a retired online school teacher. I love family history. From 2007-2020, I spent much of my time providing part-time support for the world's largest free family history site https://familysearch.org This is very rewarding. I have helped others with the Family Tree and related FamilySearch products.
In 2010-2018 I served in the Edmonton_Alberta_Riverbend_Family_History_Centre..I have a FHC blog at Bill's Family History Center Blog Since 2020 I have been a family history consultant for Edmonton Alberta North Stake. I have recently started using Googlepages (www.pages.google.com) for the "Ukrainian Genealogical and Historical Society" website. This is free from advertizing banners, but isn't a perfect solution. It doesn't support subfolders nor FTP, so files need to uploaded one at a time. This should not be a problem with small sites, but is impractical for sites that involve hundreds of files, such as those generated by genealogical databases. One other unexpected item was that the main page cannot be an uploaded file. I solved the problem of access to a framed site by making the main page a "Click to Enter" page. See http://ukrainiangenealogist.googlepages.com/ I have also used Portable Picasa to upload hundeds of old family photos to the Web. It worked very slick, but I am not sure whether it creates thumbnail views. It seemed to load very slowly on dial-up. Still, 1 GB of photo storage will hold a LOT of photos. I am impressed by what Google is offering us for free.
