I have recently started using Googlepages (www.pages.google.com) for the "Ukrainian Genealogical and Historical Society" website. This is free from advertizing banners, but isn't a perfect solution. It doesn't support subfolders nor FTP, so files need to uploaded one at a time. This should not be a problem with small sites, but is impractical for sites that involve hundreds of files, such as those generated by genealogical databases. One other unexpected item was that the main page cannot be an uploaded file. I solved the problem of access to a framed site by making the main page a "Click to Enter" page. See http://ukrainiangenealogist.googlepages.com/ I have also used Portable Picasa to upload hundeds of old family photos to the Web. It worked very slick, but I am not sure whether it creates thumbnail views. It seemed to load very slowly on dial-up. Still, 1 GB of photo storage will hold a LOT of photos. I am impressed by what Google is offering us for free.
